Ride
with us all year through at Exmoor Owl and Hawk Centre for some
of the best horse riding on Exmoor. Our rides stretch as far
as you can see from our farm, covering Porlock Hill, Ley Hill,
Dunkery, Grabbist, North Hill, Selworthy Beacon, and Porlock
Vale, offering views to Devon, South Wales, The Quantocks, and
beyond. We believe this wonderful landscape offers some of the
best riding in the world, with ever changing scenery through
the seasons, on quality riding horses to suit all riders. Ours
are not trekking horses and we cover miles in our half day ride.
We
hope you enjoy the scenery and National Trust countryside as
much as we do!..............
This
is our riding country - the Holnicote Estate,
given to the National Trust by Sir Francis Acland in 1944 for
us all to enjoy. It offers a varied
landscape of high heather moorland, ancient woodlands and dramatic
cliffs, interspersed with picturesque villages and farms and
spectacular scenery stretching across miles of moorland and
coast.
Diverse and rare wildlife, including barbastelle bats and heath
fritillary butterflies abound the hills and woods, with villages
offering charming village cottages ranging from Medieval to
19th century and working farms home to Exmoor horn sheep and
Exmoor ponies.
Bossington
Hill
Spectacular
panorama with views over maritime heathland, moorland and coast.
It is a great starting point for woodland rides to Selworthy,
Allerford and Bossington along rugged coastal paths. Churring
nightjars can be heard on summer evenings. SS911477.
Dunkery Beacon
A vast expanse
of open heather moorland, home to red deer and Exmoor ponies.
It is also the highest point on Exmoor, making it an excellent
spot to savour the breathtaking views over Dartmoor, Wales
and the Severn Estuary. SS892415
Selworthy Village
A quintessential English
village set on a hillside overlooking the Vale of Porlock,
with stunning views to Dunkery Beacon. This charming village
is complete with pretty thatched cottages set around a village
green and an attractive white-washed church. SS920468
Dunkery and Horner
Wood
One of the largest National
Nature Reserves (NNR) in Britain. The ancient oak woodland
contains some of the rarest lichens in the country and is
home to fourteen species of bats. It is also one of the largest
tracts of heather moorland in the south west, supporting a
rich variety of upland birds. SS903438.
Throughout the year we are now
pleased to take out riders on our one hour introductory rides,
through the woods and up the combes. Typically through
the National Trust woods at Allerford to Selworthy village.
